These little animations are easy and quick to make. I use my iphone and have it positioned so that it won't move or fall over. Take a photo then move the object along, take another photo etc. The New York street scene above it 5 separate photos. Then using an online gif maker such as www.picasion.com or www.gifninja.com I turn it into an animation.

If you like these I am guessing you will LOVE this. Look at the very subtle movement in this image. This is the work of Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg of Cinemagraph. Check out the other awesome clips at their website.

Over the Christmas break I have gone completely bananas over apple! In the space of a week my technology horizon has expanded to include an imac, an ipad and the iphone 4s. Dont get me wrong i am loving it but switching from a pc to a mac feels like learning to drive a manual car in a hurry without a driving instructor. Throw into the mix a change from existing internet provider iprimus to brand new, promise the world and deliver nothing Telstra (read 5 days with no connectivity) and you can begin to imagine the tension building in our house.

That said, I am very happy to be an Apple all rounder. My current obsession is apps that provide creative distraction while I am out and about. Here are some of my faves ...

silent film director | makes movies directly on your iphone using effects like 1920's (think Charlie Chaplin complete with dinky music and fast film) or 1960's which is my fave and makes everything look like a Super 8 shot Kennedy home movie.

picture frames | allows you to make a single image by combining 2, 3 or 4 images into one

group shot | this is VERY clever and allows you edit your picture with facial recognition technology - no more ruined shots because little Johnny always closes his eyes!

and of course instagram and coloursplash which if you dont already have then go immediately to the app store.

Apple store in Paris - what's not to love

I came across this incredibly creative fashion shoot for English luxe clothing label Mulberry on fashion gone rogue. The set design is by Shona Heath who has the best job in the world and the photography is by Tim Walker whose work always has a fantastical look about it.

The colouration of the eggs and the and broken shells are incredible - creative genius. Look at the fox on set in the short clip below.

creative corners // at home with Danni Townsend O'Neil

Our kick off post for 2012 is a peek at the corners of Danni Townsend O'Neil's home in Myrtleford, 3.5 hours north east of Melbourne. Danni is a Mag Square stalwart and the founder of Tickets for Coco with business partner and cousin Brooke Murphy and more recently their little adventure into home wares and taxidermy with Mr Fallow. Danni is also my sister and I am constantly amazed with her ability to pull spaces together in a distinctly unique way.

Danni is a true collector of the remnants of days gone by and when she gets a bee in her bonnet about something in particular there is, well, no stopping her. I wouldn't be exaggerating to say an etsy found product arrives in her mail box every other day of the week!

The little German frozen charlotte doll above is one such find. Danni says "Etsy is a treasure box and I explore it constantly! The attic's of many American homes are literally being cleared out and sent all around the world in little brown parcels!"

The vintage inspired decorating theme is seamlessly presented throughout the house and the bedrooms of Danni's two boys, Josh 13 and Owen 8 are not spared! But there are no complaints on that front; the boys seem to embrace their yesteryear styled living quarters. Truth is they don't tend to hang out indoors too much with all the wide open spaces around them to be discovered.

Dan is a big fan of David Bromley and has one of his amazing quilts. Old dolls are another subset of the collection, they are everywhere and while I find them intriguing I think Dan's poor husband David is more than a little disturbed about having to share a house with them.

I love these old kitchen scales. I wonder how many dozens of scones they have weighed flour for? These scales are displayed on a lovely old cabinet along with milk bottles, preserving jars, a butter churn and other well loved cooking accoutrements (including some incredible old French chocolate moulds).

No vintage inspired home would be complete without old metal letters. This lovely "G" looks fantastic in Dan's kitchen. Taxidermy has become hugely popular over the last few years. Each of Danni and Brooke's deers are named, this one is Sargent, and can be purchased from their online shop.

Another David Bromley piece above. This is a one off, hand sculpted lamp shade depicting the iconic Bromley children with their backs turned. I was with Dan the day she spotted this at the Prahan store, we had just been on a tour of the upstairs studio with David himself - suffice to say I had NEVER seen anything like it in my life before. The size of magnitude of his curated collections were utterly awesome. Click here for amazing images on the Design Files blog back in December 2009.

Danni's fabulous dining table is the handiwork of our Dad who joined together two fabulous old trestle table tops to make this one huge surface. Fit for a kings feast!!

In Danni's office, pictured above, she works under the watchful eyes of Miss Scarlet, Mr Wilkins and Mrs Potter. These old silver spoons have been re purposed as markers for a herb garden, available by contacting Danni or Brooke via the Mr Fallow website.

The view from the kitchen sink is superb and often includes a mob of kangaroos grazing on the back lawn. If you love Danni's style, here are some suggestions on where you might source a treasure or two.

Mini homeware emporium Est in Auburn Rd East Hawthorn is a favourite retail hangout of mine. I especially love it at Christmas time. Proprietor Carolyn Imlach (rolling soap balls in the image above) was almost through her last batch for the year when I called by yesterday. Est is a total sensory experience ... the aroma of the shop beckons customers in from Auburn Rd.

I stocked up on assorted linen ribbons and twines (for DIY projects down the track), handmade Christmas decorationss, a maileg Christmas stocking and a divine Bonnie & Neil table runner. It is essential to spend at least an hour in the shop at each visit, any less and you will not take in all that is on offer.

DIY Christmas Idea #2

I love a reindeer or a moose at Christmas time and I also have a penchant for the schleich figurines (click here for the forest collection !!) not to mention spray painting!! So what a perfect reason to combine them all. I used a primer to undercoat these guys then simply gave them a couple of coats of spray paint. We went with red but they would look smashing in silver, gold or white.

We took it one step further at our last two events and encased the moose, deer et al in an upturned fishbowl shaped vase sprinked with glitter and dotted with a couple of little fir tree branches . Hey presto, its a giant snowdome!

a VERY SPECIAL cause ...

We are thrilled to announce that just over $3000 was raised for Very Special Kids through the sale of raffle tickets at our most recent event, the Malvern Town Hall Dec 1-3.

I would like to say a HUGE thank you to the Magnolia Square retailers who so generously contributed to the 3 stunning hampers that were raffled over the course of the event. Each hamper was valued at approx $1000 and the look of sheer delight on the faces of the winners was just gorgeous.

A very big thank you also goes to the volunteers who manned the Very Special Kids stand in the foyer; it was their dedication and enthusiasm that really made the difference to the number of tickets sold. I am thrilled with how successful the Mag Square / VSK association was and very much look forward to working with Yvonne Flynn and her team in 2012.

DIY Christmas Idea #1

Christmas time provides the perfect excuse to decorate the house ... but you don't need to compromise on style.

My kids love the daily advent calender treats and often I reach for the tacky supermarket style. This year I gave it some more thought and came up with this simple and inexpensive alternative. Magnolia branches (salvaged from your own tree if you are lucky enough to own one - if not invest in some lovely bare branches in winter and hold onto them all year through). The vase to support these branches has to be rather large and heavy duty to prevent the whole arrangement from tumbling on the first child that reaches up for a box.

These adorable little hand stamped boxes came from Pip Compton at Studio Lipp (purchased Christmas 2010 I'm afraid) but look around in art & craft shops and you will hopefully find something similar. Last of all pop a treat into each box. Save it all again for next year!!

magnolia square is now supporting VERY SPECIAL KIDS

I am thrilled to say that commencing with the upcoming event at the Malvern Town Hall, Magnolia Square will be raising funds and awareness for VERY SPECIAL KIDS.

Very Special Kids is a not for profit organisation whose purpose is to support families throughtout their experience of caring for children with life threatening illnesses, from diagnosis through to recovery or bereavement. They are currently supporting more than 800 families across Victoria.

Today I met with Yvonne Flynn, the Corporate & Community Fundraising Manager at Very Special Kids House in Glenferrie Rd Malvern. I learnt about the origins of VSK (it was started by 2 families in 1984 who were both going through the trauma of their children dying) and had the special priviledge of meeting some of the dear little children who are currently staying in the house; it was a very moving experience to say the least.

These gigantic piggy banks, all with their own names and personalities are the iconic symbol of Very Special Kids and we are hoping to "park a pig" smack bang outside the Malvern Town Hall. We will be raising funds through a piggy bank on our reception desk as you enter the event and also selling raffle tickets for a BUMPER sized hamper made up of all sorts of Magnolia Square goodies!!! We would LOVE your support in raising funds for this wonderful cause.

This is a very exciting direction for you Morgan – a new home, a sweet little corner shop. Tell us about the lead up to opening the crafty squirrel …

Thanks Nic! I have always thought it would be pretty fun to have my own store (and let’s face it I had to do something with my collected treasures!). The thing is I had to make it work for me around a busy wholesale business. The only way I could do it was if I combined the shop with my studio and after finding the perfect place to do that in central Ballarat – we made the tree change from Melbourne in January of this year and got down to business!

I have spent the last 20 years collecting so The Crafty Squirrel is a culmination of that collecting history and quite eclectic! My own work is always very bright and colourful and I have been drawn to a similar palette when stocking the store. Keeping the walls and furniture predominately white has worked really well as my products stand out. I have also installed a beautiful red linoleum floor, multi-coloured glass louvers in the top of the windows, a variety of vintage wallpapers on the furniture and have picked up the green from my logo for the front door.

Alongside your own gorgeous bits, what else will we find there?

A wonderful mix of old and new sit side by side - unique gifts, cool craft kits, homewares, vintage fabrics, gorgeous haberdashery and of course all of the work created under my eponymous label – Morgan Wills. I also have lots of cute Japanese and Korean stationery, French sewing notions, American embroidery kits from Sublime and lots of vintage aprons and souvenir tea towels and tablecloths. Also in the lead up to Christmas I am releasing a brand new range of craft and sewing based products under the Crafty Squirrel label.

How has the response been from Ballarat locals? Are you settling in to a creative community and meeting like minded people?

It has been amazing! I didn’t really know what to expect - the shop has been open five months and I can honestly say I love it! I have had quite a few customers come in to the store and just take a breath of delight. Most spend ages going around and discovering all the things I have collected and telling me stories of how they remember their Mothers or Grandmothers having these things and others say that they have come because someone else has told them about the shop and that they had to come and are just thrilled to be there which is sweet.

The shop is a lot of fun and full of unexpected treasures. My husband says that he wishes he knew of a shop like mine that I didn’t know about so that he had a secret place to go and buy me gifts! Having said that I have had a few wives bring their husbands in to the shop and say – “If you ever want/need to buy me a gift…this is where you should come”!I have met so many lovely local people who seem really excited to have a shop like this in their neighbourhood and have been very welcoming of me and my family. I also have many customers who drive up from Melbourne to visit just for the day and then want to know where else to go while they are in Ballarat.

What do you miss the most about Melbourne? The least?

Miss – Vietnamese food in Footscray and Yum Cha in china town.Don’t miss – traffic!

Absolutely! I have been super busy putting together a very cute range of new Crafty Squirrel products which would make lovely gifts for crafty friends and family and have also made some special edition Christmas things and will be bringing some cute bits and bobs I have collected in my travels. As well as bringing you all the best, most niche, most gorgeous products ... we think it is also important to bring your attention to creative people providing fabulous services. Jacinda Malloy of Hide & Sleep is one such person and is new to Magnolia Square. Jacinda provides a one stop shop for parents wanting to make a beautiful space for their children. You will find her in the BLOOM area near the cafe.

Tell us about the service you provide and why you think there was a gap in the market place?

Hide & Sleep is an Interior Design service focused on Children's Rooms. I started Hide & Sleep after witnessing first hand how much difficulty mother's have making decisions when it came to their children's rooms. They often know what they liked and have great taste and style, but lacked the confidence of being able to bring the room together. Sometimes they are so overwhelmed with choice that they make no decision at all and 13 years pass and the children still have sesame street bean bags.

I noticed there were many interior design services but none specialising in kids rooms, and i actually like kids more than adults (most of the time), so it seemed the perfect business for me. Now i get to work with children, be creative, meet lovely women, and feel a sense of satisfaction when i see my client's faces and watch the children's excitement, when they show off their new room.

Have interiors always been your background or was it a hobby you were passionate about ...

I owned a home wares shop in Moonee Ponds, Melbourne for a couple of years and worked at L'Oreal so i have always had an interest in design, fashion, furniture & interiors. With no children (YET) of my own, i didn't see myself becoming a children's interior designer but you never know where life will take you, and i enjoy it so much that i now can't imagine doing anything else.

How would you describe your look/style in children's interiors

As a Libran (star sign) I am very indecisive, so what i like now, may be different tomorrow. My style changes regularly but I will always love the sweet touches to a room. It's finding that perfect lamp, painting the stool sage green, discovering that Pinocchio doll at Camberwell market, or having something personal embroidered into a pillow, it's the personal touch that i love to bring to the rooms of my clients.

What are you top 3 sources of inspiration

One of my closest friends Katrina - every time i go to her home she has something new and quirky that i love, never expensive, but it's always cool. I am forever stealing her ideas.- pinterest is an amazing source of inspiration but i am finding it maybe too addictive.- the children i work with. I will have an idea & then one of them will bring home a Christmas decoration they have made and my idea goes out the window, and the room becomes themed or inspired by this little decoration they have made.

Can you give our readers a couple of cute design tricks they can implement quickly and inexpensively?

I love using wrapping paper. I use it to make inexpensive pictures, by framing different papers. I use it to cover the back of bookshelves to give them a new, revived look. Letters are very popular at the moment, so now i cover them in wrapping paper or newspaper to give them a quirky feel. It's inexpensive, & you only need to add glue or double sided tape and can you will be surprised by how many great wrapping papers there are out there. Calenders are another simple way to update pictures in children's rooms. I often buy calenders from etsy with handmade illustrations, or sweet photography, then cut images to size and frame. I often get 12 wonderful images that i can use for much less than i would pay to buy them individually. You can then give the left over dates to the children to use for BINGO. just kidding, well i guess you could if you wanted to. see i just came up with another clever idea..

Vintage Prints has recently had a tree change and opened a studio space, tell us aboutthat.

We were both ready for a change so a few months ago we moved house and studio from Mt Dandenong to Inverloch – we swapped the trees for the sea. Inverloch is a lovely little place right on the coast and we love walking on the beach looking for shells, pebbles, driftwood and feeling inspired by the natural beauty of the Australian coast and bush.

We moved into a small, open-plan place that is close to the beach and town centre. So with the house sorted, we were on the hunt for a studio space. By chance we found a small showroom and office space that was the right size for us and within our budget. The landlord drew up a gentleman's agreement and voila, we had a studio/storage space to work from and a showroom/shop as well. Its great fun having a shop and we can't wait for the summer season when all the tourists flock to Inverloch. We hear they love to shop!

Sourcing lovely old books, journals etc to work with is essential for VP tocontinue generating new stock. How difficult is this to do?

It is an essential part of the business and luckily its something we both enjoy. Since the move we have had to find new places to source vintage books and materials, but that is part of the fun – jumping in the car with a full tank of petrol and a day full of promise. We find sourcing vintage materials more time consuming rather than difficult, and as we become more specific and selective about the books we want, some of the legwork can be done over the phone. And some of our customers will tell us about a great little shop or about the stash of old books their parents have packed away in boxes.

Do you have any exciting new products that you will be bringing to the next2 shows? Can we have a sneek preview?

We have been working on some new, Christmas-themed products for the St Kilda and Malvern events – decorations for the Christmas tree, Christmas bunting to decorate the house, and a range of cards made from vintage Christmas postage stamps. And some lovely paper fold sculptures that would be great presents for the person who has everything.

Pip Thompson and Sam Avery have been mag square retailers for several years now under their own labels Pip & Maude and OhmeOhmi. The girls have more recently combined their love of fashion and their Melbourne style to create a fabulous collection under the quirky guise of THE WOLF AND I.

We love the name … where did it come from? Who is the Wolf, Sam or Pip?

After quite a bit of brain storming we came up with ‘the Wolf and I’. We like the fact our name represents a duo. ‘Amy Blackwell’, a very talented illustrator from the UK design our gorgeous logo. Who is the WOLF?...we will leave that for you to decide!

Tell us about your backgrounds ...

Sam – I have worked in the fashion industry for a number of years, mainly behind the scenes in wholesale. Since having a family I have become more involved in fashion design which I love. It is really exciting seeing an idea or sketch come to fruition. And even more exciting seeing women wearing our clothes!

Pip - I have come from a design background which has naturally lead into a mixture of creative ventures including the evolution of Pip & Maude handmade cards and stationery.I have always had an interest in fashion and the development of my own individual style while trying my best not to follow trends.While it is still a juggling act we can work our own hours from our home offices and are still able to sneak in a few coffees at our favourite haunts in St Kilda and Balaclava - The Galleon, Il-fornaio & Monk.

Describe the women who wears the wolf and I. What famous person would you most like to see in your clothes.

We design clothing that we want to wear aiming at women who are 30+. The Wolf customer loves linen & cottons, wool and silk, layering and wrapping to suit their body. She has a relaxed, effortless approached towards fashion and likes to ‘wear clothing’ rather than clothing ‘wear her’!. One thing we are learning is that you can’t please everyone and that it is important to stay true to your vision!Famous person we would like to dress - Asher Keddie – AKA - Nina from Offspring. We love her personal style.

With so much competition in women’s wear, how do you make sure your offering is unique?

The Wolf and i are keeping all our manufacturing in Australia. We believe women can see the value of an Australian made garment and it also gives us the opportunity to work closely with other Australian owned businesses.

What are your plans for the label over the next couple of years?

The Wolf and I will be exhibiting at LIFE IN STYLE tradeshow 2012. We have had such a positive response so far selling at design markets, now it is time to take the next step and go wholesale! Stayed tuned for stockists next year!

Where can we buy the range (other than Mag Square!)?

Doing events like Magnolia Square are invaluable. We hope to be doing these sort events for a long time. Listening to customer feedback is very beneficial in the development our collection. What do you see as the fashion basics for any women’s wardrobe?

After a little break from Magnolia Square mid year, Asha & Keir, the design duo from Angus & Celeste are back for the next two shows. If like me you adore their work then you'll be excited to hear there is lots of lovely new pieces in the range.

Tell us how A&C first started

After we both finished university, we were looking for something small scale that we could make together while living in a tiny terrace in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne. We started making decorative pendants from bone china in the 2x2 meter laundry that we transformed into a workshop. We both enjoyed it and we have been expanding ever since.

Your success and the expansion of your brand has been pretty amazing. Describe how that has been.

The past few years have been incredibly busy. We have put so much energy, and time into the growth of our business and this can be pretty stressful when coupled with the usual daily grind that comes with just making a business function. We constantly chatter, argue, plan and dream. We think the longer you do something the easier it becomes. Systems and an ability to know when to switch off are a necessity.

How does a typical day unfold at the A&C studio?

We usually start the day with the emails, (we both spend way to much time on the computer these days!) then we set onto packing orders from our website and for our stockists. We have both now expert skills in the art of packing a fragile product! A trip to the post office usually follows. Once these tasks are done we feel more clear headed to start the day with bigger picture stuff. The general tasks vary, and are usually production based. We both enjoy unpacking the kiln. It is satisfying but can also be heartbreaking when things don't work! We both put a lot of energy into co ordinating the folks that help us with our manufacture. We call it our guerilla work force. The wonderful women who help us achieve our final product are just great and we would be lost without them.

You have such a strong “signature” aesthetic. How do you remain so true to that yet manage to evolve so seamlessly?

It is hard to answer but we think we owe a lot to our fine art training which has a strong focus on developing a distinctly individual aesthetic and then refining it. We are also aware that we cant do everything, Ceramics and illustration is our core and we try and push these two elements as far as we can within the commercial reality of making and selling a product to earn a living. Understanding this balance is pretty important.

What has been a best selling product for you?

Our rings are a constant favourite which is why we do over 50 different patterns and colours! We try to have one to suit everyone. Our bracelets are also a silent achiever, they are very tricky to make but we think the end result is something quite special and timeless. They are something that will not go out of fashion. Our botanic bottles and vases have also been great. People have really responded to these which is great as we enjoy making them.

What new product are you most excited about?

We are pretty excited about our new hanging gardens. They took a long time to develop. We had initially made some for our selves and had them hanging on our own verandah. We both love growing things. It took a while but we eventually got them up and running as a product. We hope that people get the same enjoyment out of them as we have had. We also hope that they are a product we can continue to evolve.

5 tips for a creative person starting their own adventure …
1.) Patience.
2.) Planning. As well as remembering that Rome wasn't built in a day.
3.) A general love and interest in what you do
4.) Don't compare your self to others- just be yourself and do your own thing.
5.) The most significant of all is persistence. Without this you are doomed!

What does the next 12 months hold for A&C ?
Carve out more time to enjoy the creative side of the business. At the moment this is our biggest most concrete goal for 2012.

where do you hope to be in 5 years?

We hope in five years we are still able to be making items which we and other people love and desire. We also hope to have the time to make more one-off creations that don't need to be repeated. Managing production with strict consistency is pretty hard work! We hope to have more creative freedom in 5 years.

Last of all, dream holiday location?

We live in the Dandenong Ranges in outer Melbourne. This year has been so wet, rainy and cold! Our dream holiday location at the moment would be anywhere that is warm and dry with blue sky! We are planning some jaunts to the North of Australia. Darwin is currently at the top of our list. Also WA is meant to be amazing in spring when all the wildflowers are in bloom.

martha gets me in the zone

I am determined to be more hands on for Christmas this year. In the past I've been so hands on with Magnolia Square that by Christmas day I can barely stand the thought of another fluffy paper pom pom or a meticulously wrapped box of home baked gingerbread! But that is NOT the spirit and this year I want to get myslef in the zone.

You've gotta admit it, there is something lovely about the tickety boo, strawberries & cream images from the Martha Stewart Inc machine ... especially at "holiday" time. I have trawled through a whole lot of average ideas to come up with these inexpensive, creative and downright cute little Christmas projects, all courtesy of the queen of craft herself.

idea #1 is to create your own beautiful gift wrap by colour photo copying lovely fabrics (maybe from a pretty floral dress or a scarf you love, it'd be liberty fabrics of course for me!!)

idea #2 is to fill an otherwise empty jar with a colourful lolly selection and give it as a gift. The Bonne Maman jam jars would do the job very nicely!

in the spotlight: retro print revival

A love of the bright, bold and beautiful textiles of the 60's and 70's together with a skilled eye for pulling a look together has placed Tamara Watts well and truly in the retro spotlight. We are really excited to have Tamara with us in a couple of weeks at the St Kilda show.

How did Retro Print Revival come about Tamara?

About five years ago, I held an exhibition of vintage fabrics stretched over canvasses. Almost as afterthought, I made a lampshade to go with an old lamp base I’d found, and put in it the exhibition as well. It totally stole the show, and Retro Print Revival was born!

What is your background?

I studied Visual Merchandising at RMIT, and worked in the industry for over five years, both freelancing and for Country Road as a Visual Merchandiser/Stylist. The transition to full-time lamp creation only happened about two years ago after completing the NEIS Scheme in early 2010.

First childhood memory of yourself as a creative person ...

As a young girl, I would create scenery collages, cutting out fabric people, horses, houses and trees and sewing them onto a background. I wonder if my mum still has them folded away in the linen cupboard!

Who are your style icons – furnishings and fashion?

I admire the beautiful nature inspired and geometric designs of Florence Broadhurst wallpapers and fabrics. My wardrobe is full to the brim of Twiggy (although I don’t have her frame) and Edie Sedgwick style outfits. Anything vintage, bold, sparkly, a mini, or a maxi, I’ll wear it!

You have had great PR – any tips for new starters

I’ve been very lucky. Newspapers and magazines have always approached me to do features, I haven’t had to be too aggressive with my media presence.My advice to up-and-comers is: try and find a unique market that nobody else is doing, you’ll find it a hard road if you’re just churning out the same stuff as everybody else. Make sure your website is eye-catching and up-to-date, a good online presence is cheap or free and could gain you attention around the globe!

Where do you source all of these amazing retro lamp bases?

That’s my biggest secret! It’s taken me two years, but I finally have managed to find some wonderful sources for great lamp bases and fabrics.

Have you had a favourite lamp?

I’ve just released a new line of Danish-inspired Rocket Lamps, they are really special and hard to come across these days. I have a carpenter make legs for them out of Mountain Ash and Oregon. I then varnish them in teak, make the shades in vintage fabrics and put them together. I really love these lamps, and I’m hoping that they “take off” at Magnolia Square! …Sorry.

inspired // New York's TINSEL TRADING CO

As well as providing lots of shopping opportunities my recent trip to NY was a visual feast. Inspiration for our christmas creative was fuelled by the colourful ribbons, glitter, trims and sparkly ornaments at the Tinsel Trading Company in west 37th Street NY. This treasure chest of adornments & decorations has been in the one family for 4 generations. The quantity and pristine quality of the stock, much of it unopened since its original production decades ago was a sight to behold. It's a Martha Stewart favourite and a regular drop in for some of New Yorks top fashion designers.

My very last day in New York involved a mad dash to the last anthropologie store on my list, the store at the Chelsea Market. I had no more than one hour to photograph the store, shop and chat to the friendly instore merchandiser Wren before a quick subway ride uptown, checking out of the apartment and heading for JFK. evolution // soho's cabinet of curiosities

A very cool place to check out is Evolution in Soho. I should preface that by saying it is cool if you like taxidermy, framed and mounted insect collections, skeletons, skulls, fossils and other very old rocks etc etc. It's a giant cabinet of curiosity and well and truly worth a visit if that is your thing. It was fashion week in New York last week and Evolution got in on the act with Bergdorf Goodman partnering with them in a window display for their 5th Ave store.

This was another WOW experience. The dioramas of the AMNH are so realistic you will want to just reach out and pat a rhino or a moose! This is a great place to take children and convenient to reach via subway; the platform leads straight into the museum entrance.

Today I went to ABC Carpet & Home which is close to the flatiron building. I have one word (actually one abbreviation) ... OMG. If you are a lover of visual merchandising then you need to get to ABC. It is 6 beautiful floors of WOW. The images below are of the Little One store on the 2nd floor of ABC Carpet & Home. They had lots of pieces by Tamar Mogendorff which was very exciting for me, I am a big admirer of her clever work.

Yesterday we visited The Antiques Garage at 112 West 25th Street in the area known at Hells Kitchen ... in close vicinity to the Flatiron district, named after the famous building pictured left. It is open on the weekends only; I loved it and could have spent all day fossicking.

We then stumbled upon Eataly at 200 5th Ave, an Italian marketplace of fresh produce.We enjoyed a platter of cured meats, a selection of cheeses, figs and individually wrapped bread. Put it on your MUST SEE list if you get to NY.

PS. I have found the website hopstop to be a BIG help when planning my day - directions from where you are to where you are going and you get to slect walking, subway, buses or a combination.

Paula Rubenstein Ltd

I am orienteering myself around New York with the help of Sibella Court and her Stylists Guide. One of Sibella's favourite stores is Paula Rubenstein Ltd at 65 Prince Street in Soho ... so I paid a visit yesterday.

This revered shop is for serious collectors of American textiles, furniture pieces, jewellery, all sorts of paper ephemera, framed paintings and the usual bobbins, trims and notions. While I was in the store a Ralph Lauren props buyer was scoping out a very large bench seat.

The front windows were displaying vintage dress maker mannequins, the likes of which I have not seen in Melbourne or anywhere else for that matter. Paula's speciality seems to be vintage & industrial rag trade. The loft section of the store (which was out of bounds) was overflowing with every kind of cloth bust and hundreds of wooden engraved coat hangers, all for hire but not for sale.

Anthropologie in SOHO

I can't belive I have waited until day 3 to blog about, you guessed who ... anthropologie. Definately the winner for me thus far when it comes to visual merchandising. i was always aware of their sublime windows but i wasn't expecting quite so many in store installations. They are sheer genius! Each and every Anthropologie store across the U.S. has it own art department.

There is a lot of yellow in the current range and I have found myself very drawn to it ... the grey & yellow cardi top left has found it way into my shopping bag. The window above is at the Soho store on West Broadway. More images to follow.

Well unless you live under a rock, I am of course in New York city. These images are all very NY to me and are in no particular order. Along with the rest of NYC I am completely obsessed with Mad Men. Clothing store Banana Republic currently have a MM inspired collection. Are you Betty, Joan or Peggy?

The yellow cab is of course one of the most enduring icons of NY; the streets are full of them. Where in the hell were they last night though when I was standing drenched on a Soho street corner, weighed down by a tonne of soggy shopping bags, not wanting to tackle the subway, ready to throw myself in front of one ...

Woody Allen, usually looking forlorn is often photogrpahed on the streets of NY and of course Jackie Kennedy was the epitome of NY style and casual chic.

The plaza hotel which overlooks the park is unfortunately NOT where I am staying! The little blue box, a girls best friend really and NY street signage ... exciting in real life. The I heart NY icon would surely have to be this city's logo. It doesn't seem to matter that its plastered across every cheap and nasty piece of tourist memorabilia. Good typography will take you a long way!

Today I plan to visit MoMA and see some of the Andy Warhol pieces on display there. The original exhibition of Campbell's soup cans in 1962 was made up of 32 individual canvases, representing each of the flavours currently available at the time. Donut anyone? Love the brownstone apartments, the building facades covered in iron fire escapes, shopping at Bergdorf Goodman and the New York city doorman ... present in just about every movie ever filmed here in New York.

And sadly, the image of the twin towers smouldering before their collapse, which is of course only days away from being 10 years ago. And no NY image round up would be complete without a little breakfast at Tiffany's.

Ivanhoe wrap up

Here are some lovely images (all by Sarah Wood Photography) of our show at Ivanhoe a couple of weeks ago. It was a huge success and well worth the very early start. We had close to 3,500 through the doors over 2 days, an overwhelming response from Ivanhoe and its surrounding areas. We look forward to coming back in 2012.

The show was a tribute to colour, can you tell! The pink items tumbling down the stairs are the handiwork of Heather Nette King and Jane Hall. We were very happy with the razzle dazzle lighting!

Heather kindly lent us her bentwood chairs; these were used most recently in a shoot for dulux - most of Heathers possessions, including these chairs have seen many coats of paint in a myriad of colours.

I recently saw the very sweet Mara Girling from PRINTSPACE at tradeshow Life in Style and was so impressed with how busy her and hubby Nick had obviously been ... so many new products and a fabulous stand to boot. This weekend we have them at Mag Square and we couldnt be happier ... such a lovely couple!

Mara tell us your career history ...

We began Printspace in 2006, and at that time we were producing artwork on canvas. It wasn’t until 2008 that we began working on paper and started the Printspace you see now. Both Nick and I studied graphic design, and Nick also runs our graphic design business. I worked at a variety of smaller graphic design studios when I graduated and my last job pre children was working as a graphic designer in the marketing department of Country Road.

Printspace is you and your lovely husband Nicholas Girling. How do you make it work smoothly?

I think we are actually very lucky, our taste is very similar, and where it differs, it is usually complimentary. While we approach art differently we are heading towards the same place. Also when reviewing new works, we both need to approve the art for it to become part of our range.

Printspace has a lovely modern aesthetic. From where do you draw inspiration for the designs and the colour palette?

We are inspired by the design of the Modernist Era, not just the graphic design but also the textile and product design, Inspiration also comes from vintage posters and art movements such as Russian Constructivism and Cubism.

Describe the creative process (from concepts to finished design). How long does it take to complete one new illustration?

We sit down and have a brain storm and discuss what we want to achieve with a new range. Then Nick and I go away and come up with a selection of rough concepts, sketched in pencil. From there we talk about the ideas and work out what may work or not work.

From this point on we work differently, I work quite methodically on a few illustrations at once developing them as a group. Nick works more spontaneously on individual pieces by inventing and exploring textures and shapes. Once the drawing and refining has taken place on paper, we sometimes move on to the computer for the last little details and colour. This can go on for several months until we are both happy with the illustrations.

You have recently expanded your range, tell us about that?

We have a million ideas on the boil, and so many things we want to achieve, so its really exciting when one happens. We have created a small range of posters that are bursting with Printspace colour and characters, which will be available early September. Nick has produced a Modernist inspired set of Australian Animal Posters and Info based posters. I have created an Alphabet Poster (which we have had many a customer ask for) and a Jungle Animal Poster in 2 colour options. We wanted to create art on a bigger scale that was still affordable.

What piece is your best seller?

With over 60 prints in the range, that is almost impossible to answer. It constantly changes but I would have to say that the print of the moment would be: “Lovely Day”.

Advice to a creative person wishing to start their own business ...

Research your idea. Start off small, and build and learn as you go. Ask lots of questions. Most importantly I would say, choose a career in something you LOVE and are passionate about. It is a lot of work and the hours can be long so it really does need to be something you are committed to. But that’s what makes it so rewarding.

Where do you see printspace in 3-5 years time?

This is a really hard question. If all goes to plan, bigger and better, with a lovely mix of products to compliment the illustrations.

Describe your personal style.

I naturally think of my ideal home. A love of all things Modernist and Scandinavian. Simplicity in design. Nothing too fussy or heavily detailed. One (very large) object I’d like to own is The Woodway Residence by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson Photos by architectural photographer Nic Lehoux.

Today we are talking to one of Magnolia Squares most loved artists, Paula Mills of Sweet William. Paula's unique style permeates through all aspects of her life, right down to the red front door of her beautiful new home. Paula has won our visual merchandising prize at least 4 times now for her quirky, pretty & colourful displays. Make sure you pop past and see her this weekend at the Ivanhoe show.

Tell us about your new home …
We have bought a little cottage in the woods in Warrandyte. The favorite part of my home is the view - our living room and deck over looks a canopy of trees and so even if the house feels a little on the small side the amazing out look gives a sense of space.

Brief career history from high school …

I grew up in a creative enviroment in many beautiful parts of the world. I studied commercial art in Cape Town and started my career as a junior art director in advertising.I went to work as an art director in London for 8 years. I then traveled the globe, had 3 babies and found myself dabbling in freelance graphic design.

I was soon led back to my paints and pens and have at last, found my home in illustrating. Now based in Melbourne, I have had some wonderful opportunitiesto work for a variety of clients as well as the chance to start my own creative business called Sweet William.

First memories of yourself as a creative person

My very first childhood memory is of me painting a bright yellow sun besides a swimming pool; I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember!

Paula if you were a typeface, which one would you be?

Oh that's easy - I would be a hand drawn font! I love the waiver in a hand drawn line and I have hand drawn the alphabet many times!

Sources of inspiration …

When my kids were very young and I wanted to do some thing creative I found Illustration Friday very helpful - they post a theme every week for any one to illustrate. The site was started by a very talented illustrator called Penelope Dullaghan and I often turn to her work for inspiration. I am addicted to interiors magazines and can't go with out the UK Elle Decoration, Living etc, Red online, Frankie, Inside Out and Country Style to name a fewI love the styling work of Emily Chalmers and have most of her interiors books including her latest one Modern Vintage Style which is wonderful!

I am constantly looking out for creative work that inspires me and one of my latest creative crushes is on Olaf Hajek - an amazing illustrator! Besides from all of that I follow a huge amount of blogs, some of my favorites are: frolic; lobster and swan; design for mankind; poppytalk; modish; design files; pikaland; design sponge; design is mine; sfgirlbyday; creature comforts; hello friend; fine; design squish oh I could go on and on....

Describe your style and design aesthetic

My style is eclectic and I have always been drawn to all things vintage (I had a vintage tin collection in a granny hat box as a teenager!) I love old things and hand made things so my drawings incorporate all of that - I draw on old vintage paper by hand. I like quirkiness and imperfection.

Tell us about some recent projects / new work ...

I've recently had lots of fun with a bunch of wild flowers, bought at a farmers market, my water colors, ink and brushes. Some of the flower studies are of proteas, which are amongst my favorites.

They remind me of my sunny homeland, South Africa, where they grow wild all over the place. They seem to grow very well here in Australia too, I will be sure to plant some protea bushes in our wild bushy garden. These prints are available in our etsy shop and for the very first time at Magnolia Square on the weekend.

Are your children creative?

My kids are constantly drawing and I am inspired by their wonderful naive stlye - I wish could have more of that in my own work. At one the markets a lady picked up a coloring in book for sale on my table and was amused to find the inside front cover had been inscribed by my daughter Rosie who had also decided to colour in a few of the pages herself!

What are you currently loving?

I am currently loving all the wonderful stationary and paper goods around and wondering how Sweet William's stationary range can be expanded - it is pretty tricky competing with all the amazing products that are being massed produced abroad but I am determined to offer a unique, locally produced small range some how...

What are you tired of?

I am tired of the Union Jack - I have a lovely vintage flag from a flea market in London but when you see something being plastered all over every surface printable it's time to move on... (along with the 'keep calm and carry' motto and the bus roll posters!)

We'll have a star in our midst at Mag Square this weekend. Veteran actor and TV presenter Jane Hall is also a decorating whizz and it is in her new role as Salvation Jane that she will join stylist Heather Nette King at our show.

The girls will stir up a storm of colour and prove that creating unique & contemporary looks in your home can be done inexpensively by working with pieces you already have. Jane and Heather will be avalable to chat between 11am-3pm on each day ... so please don't be shy, have your questions ready or better still bring a photo of the object you would like to salvage!!

Brief career history from high school …

I studied Fashion Design at RMIT, regrettably never completing my degree, as my acting career really took over. I have bounced from role to role across TV, film, theater and radio, most recently appearing as Rebecca in ‘Neighbours’. ‘Salvation Jane’ was formed in 2010, and I hope to be able to combine my design and acting careers in this next phase of my professional life.

First memories of yourself as a creative person…

I have been drawing and sewing in my spare time for my whole life. My mother was an art teacher, so creativity was always encouraged!

Sources of inspiration …

I devour all the good interiors mags, my favourites being ‘Living etc’ and ‘Habitus’. I read millions of blogs, my favourites change daily, and I try to keep my eyes open to see the beauty everywhere I go.

Describe your style and design aesthetic …

My style is ecclectic and varied, I don’t believe anyone should be governed by a ‘style’, I just think you need to surround yourself with stuff that you love. If I have one great design aesthetic, it would be that I embrace colour!

Is your daughter creative?

My daughter draws beautifully. She has sketchbooks full of character based cartoon style drawings. She spends hours at her little drawing table, lost in the world she creates!

What are you currently loving?
COLOUR!! The blossoms exploding, the scent of jasmine in the air and my bright new ‘Salvation Jane’ range of bedlinen, due out in spring.

What are you tired of?

Design snobs, bad manners, litter bugs, conflict, dog poo and admin!

I am happiest when … I am in the sun.

I am cranky when … I am tired!

Tell us about your involvement in the next mag square event…

Heather and I adore collaboration, especially when it involves working with colour and its amazing ability to ‘save’ stuff! The opportunity to create a display for an event as classy as ‘Magnolia Square’ is both an honour and a challenge.

We are very excited to be joined by two creative, clever and colourful characters at this next show. Heather Nette King, a freelance writer and stylist whose work features in the pages of Australia's best home titles including Real Living & Country Style and Jane Hall, who has graced our television screens since the tender age of 13 and has now turned her creative eye to a new venture called Salvation Jane. Brief career history from high school …

I studied PR at RMIT, then worked in the entertainment industry in production and PR – artist management, concert touring, theatre production, then a very long stint at network TEN in publicity. All that time I had a stash of interior mags under my desk, and dreamed of breaking into styling one day. When I moved to Sydney with my family in 2005 I decided that as I was in the magazine capital of Australia I would have to finally follow my dream, and started getting a folio of work together.

First memories of yourself as a creative person

OK, this is in no particular order – Elle deco UK, Living etc, all of the Aussie home titles, Maison Francaise, I have a blog list of literally hundreds that I love to lose time wandering through. And Grace Coddington.

Describe your style and design aesthetic...

Um...capricious? My style changes all the time. The constants though are colour and detail. I love to look at something then discover hidden layers. And I am definitely not a minimalist!

Are your children creative?

Yes, my eldest daughter Annebelle is 14 and she’s devoted to her tumblr page. I think she has a great eye for fashion (and she has about four times the followers on her page as my own little blog does!) Alexandra is 12 and is more the creative homebody – her room is full of doll real estate that is constantly getting made-over and renovated. Neither are shy of giving me their opinion on my work!

What are you currently loving?

Indoor plants. Lush greenery.

What are you tired of?

Union Jack’s and tram scrolls. Lovely, but over.

I am happiest when …

(aside from the usual when I am with my family answer) - when I have a shoot that day

I am cranky when …

products don’t turn up for shoots. When shopkeepers and staff are rude (luckily it doesn’t happen often in Melbourne though).

Tell us about your involvement in the next mag square event …

Jane and I are putting together a bit of a before and after display to show how we love to save the existing pieces of furniture in your home by using creativity and colour.

Colour forms and big part of my styling work, and I love nothing better than to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Jane is so clever at this that she has made a business out of it (and still manages to be a mum and a busy actor - phew). Visitors to Mag Square can come and have a chat, ask us anything – maybe even bring in a photo of something they would like to do up, but don’t know where to start. We’d love to share our ideas. What a very tardy blogger I have been. Things are gearing up for the next show (9 days away) and I have had my head down. As is the case before every event we have a fun time being creative ... this translates to lots of paint, paper, fabric, wood, tissue paper, glue and means, oh yes - MESS at my house. Add a dog who has no respect for boundaries or tissue paper pom poms into the mix and the result is total chaos.

I'm sure many Melbourne readers of Snippets already know about Nook Vintage in Johnston Street Fitzroy. Put it on your to do list if you haven't already got there. I popped in on Sunday afternoon looking for mag square props for the upcoming show - Sibella Court had been in the day before and David Bromley during the week!

The store is a homage to the motherland for English Owners Rachel and Gary. The star of the show is the union jack in flag, bunting and cushion form. They currently have a good selection of cloth mannequins (which are tricky to find), fabulous wooden crates for $25 each and deck yourself out in shoes and clothes with a retro feel. Lots of apothecary bottles, old jars, vintage maps, destination scrolls (see below ... we NEED it don't we!!) and metal marquee letters both reproduction (made to order) and the real deal.

Rachel and Gary are LOVELY and couldn't be more helpful.

design made trade 2011 - highlights

Yesterday I checked out Design Made Trade, which I enjoy visiting each year. Design markets can be a bit like blog surfing, lots of the same, seen that, been there, bought it last week and then suddenly you come across a little jewel, sparkling a bit shinier than the others. There was the usual repetition and always an abundance of screen printed product and laser cut everything but I found some great new makers (well new in the sense that they'd flown under my radar) and some not so new but doing great things.

And o design is a very sweet ceramic jewellery/object collection by Japanese born, Melbourne residing Yumi Ando. The colours are soft and muted and the designs include trees, clouds, hot air balloons and ampersands (love an ampersand). My favourite shop Maiike Store in Hawthorn is a stockist. Nice to meet you Yumi.

Also loved these kits (makeKit) by Harvest Textiles; clouds, cushions and totes. Screen printed yes, but loving the concept of taking a little project home. Great gift for the budding crafter.

Penny Farthing Design House had a couple of great new products - the gentleman on horseback with the yellow embroided riding jacket was striking and OMG, talk about X marks the spot (see below). We love a bit of typography around the home!

Beth Emily is a Tasmanian artist, her work has an ethereal quality. Some of her pieces were printed on the very innovative panelpop stone surface, the print is then embedded in a recycled wooden frame. The result is completely stunning. Panelpop are based in Fitzroy, the process is such a craft in itself.

One of my favourite finds was definately the cumulus pendant lights by SA based design studio Enoki. They are soooo beautiful. Minimal but decorative, contemporary but reminiscent of a chandelier or something more traditional. Love love love ... and they arrive at your front door flat packed.

Also loved evostyle for their amazing furniture and joinery, all made in Australia. Stunning quality and finish - look at the oversized bolt style stools.

I am currently a little obsessed with the totally awesome, one off bags made by Amsterdam based Leslie Oschmann. Her work first came to my attention at the last Mag Square event (Malvern in April). Our lovely guest on the Saturday, Pia Jane Bijkerk was sporting one of these one of a kind oil painting bags. Leslie is a good friend of Pia's from Amsterdam AND she just happens to be one of the original genius creators of the whole anthropologie phenomenon, and you know how I feel about that!

Leslie also upholsters vintage chairs in the canvases. It includes a couple of Australian artists Sam Robinson and Anna Wili Highfield)

Very excited to receive my copy of Selvedge Magazine in the post this week. Always full of inspiration and the stories of incredibly talented textile artisans. A couple of nice finds ... the cover shot features the fashions of Nygards Anna, a Swedish clothing label, love their range images. Also the work of Marie-Pierre Genest of Les Toiles Blanches who re purposes old linens, website and blog very sweet.

And look at the stunning craftsmanship of UK textile artist Rosalind Wyatt, breathtaking. Wish I could be in London 17 September for the Selvedge Autum Fair!

Question. Is tirelessly searching the blogosphere for nothing in particular a past time (read problem) for anyone else? I can so happily fill a couple of hours on a quest for everything and nothing. I must say though, I was happy to stumble upon the autum/winter 2011 RICE catalog (the fabulous Danish home/kitchen ware people).

I have a great collection of their little multi coloured melamine cups but I was concerned about how I would replace them when the time came. Very excited when I discovered I can buy them online at Lark. And no this is not a paid advertisement I just really like the cups!

One of my favourite jobs at Mag Square is working on the creative aspects of how we will market each event. The upcoming show (August 20-21 in Ivanhoe) is all about colour ... here are some quick snaps of what we were getting up to last week.

Tuesday Designs is such a pretty name and perfectly suited to the beautiful paper artworks it describes, by sisters Taryn and Elise Eales. A combination of letterpress techniques and exquisite fabric applique form the basis of these works, each and every one of which is unique and one of a kind. I first came across Tuesday Designs in Husk and then later saw them hanging on the wall of one of my fave cafes, three bags full in Melbourne's Abbotsford.

Tell us about your backgrounds

Taryn has an honours degree in printmaking. It was at Uni that I fell in love with the medium of blind lino embossing. The texture is created by chiselling out the design in Lino and then finally pushing heavy, damp paper into these marks under high pressure using an etching press. I love the tactile quality, that you can't help but want to run your hands over the paper almost like braille.

Elise has a diploma in fashion and textiles. Fabric has always been a passion, particularly vintage silks and japanese linen. The endless use of colour and depth in Japanese textiles is inspiring. I also began playing with machine and hand embroidery. Just another form of drawing really but with thread instead of pencil. Both of us worked for Brisbane designers Easten Pearson, hand sewing and detailing.

We were asked to put together an exhibition for a little cafe where Taryn spent her weekends as a barista in Paddington in Brisbane. (Coffee and art go hand in hand). The works sold out on the first day. We had an amazing response to our designs which gave us confidence to approach other homewares stores.

What is your earliest memory of yourself as a creative person? What was it you made/created?

Elise and I have always been creative. Always drawing and painting... sewing, knitting. We both attended a Steiner school since kindergarten. The school curriculum is in itself very creative. Imagination is encouraged...our flights of fancy took us adventuring very young.

How would you best describe your business? Where would you like it to be in 5 years.

We are working on a range of clothing accessories including jewellery and bags. Lately we've been fantasising about our own little Tuesday designs store, stocking clothing and home wares. Of course there would be a bird theme. Who knows where the wind will blow?

Describe a typical day in the studio.

The day doesn't start without tea, and a phone call to each other. Taryn now lives on the Sunshine coast, while Elise is still in Melbourne. We miss each other terribly and find the distance makes the creative process harder. We look forward to monthly visits when we can sit together sketching over coffee, and brainstorming. We have always seemed to finish each others thoughts and even sentences. This is very much how our process of designing works.

Day to day, what is it that inspires creativity in you? Any fave blogs or magazines …

Markets! The farmers markets for the magic that is good food, passionate producers and children in their winter woolies. And Bric a brac markets for the treasure hunt.

We've recently fallen in love with the beautiful children's magazine Papier Mache. Only 2 a year but they are worth the wait. Blogs www.thedesignfiles.net, www.whatkatieate.blogspot.com and Paul Barbera's www.wheretheycreate.com are regular sources of inspiration.

What has been your greatest success to date?

Our daily emails from people admiring and wanting to hang our designs on their walls. It still feels like such a gift to be able to do what we love and have other people appreciate it, let alone hang them in their personal spaces. A couple of years ago we were asked to do a range of work for the Mater hospital in Brisbane. Our work now hangs above the beds of new mums holding their little ones. What a moment to be part of - that is a gift.

What are you loving at the moment?

Taryn has a brand new little one herself. Her smile lights up the world.

Inseperable (despite the distance). Dreamers. Nesting.

A couple of months ago now the lovely Heather Nette King, stylist and writer for the Sunday Age, worked her magic in our "good room" and the finished result was in the paper over the weekend (The Sunday Life, with Rose Byrne on the cover). I say the good room very tongue in cheek. It doesn't get used very much but it is the perfect place for the goodies I have accumulated over the years through Magnolia Square. Tell us about your journey...

I completed a Diploma of Arts (Ceramics) at The University of Ballarat in 2006, I then applied for an Australia Council grant to set up a small studio with a gas kiln and electric wheel. While working part time in retail shops locally and making my first collection of ceramic utensils (pestle and mortars, spoons, sieves, and vessels). In 2009 I began working full time in my practice and now work constantly on exhibition works, wholesale and commission orders as well as selling online and at markets.

What are your earliest memories of yourself as creative? Was your family creative?

I was always encouraged to use my hands from an early age, from building sandcastles to making objects from found materials, and always drawing. Both parents have always made art and taught art, my mum is a painter and art restorer and my father is a sculptor.

I live in a house with my mum, she has her studio where she restores antiques and collectables, she’s always working on something new and interesting. My father has taught me many techniques in printmaking, etching and modeling processes this year I hope to learn more about bronze casting.

Describe a typical day in your studio.

A typical day in the studio starts with turning on the radio in time for the conversation hour on classical FM whilst lighting my wood fire, collecting water in a bucket from an outside tap and cleaning my tools and work bench.

I begin by preparing my clay, wedging it like kneading dough, then I equally measure out the clay, roll it and place it onto a board near my wheel. The morning is the best time to throw as the light is just perfect.

I use an electric wheel to centre the clay and shape it using my hands and several tools. I then wait for it to harden and begin to manipulate the form further by piercing, squashing, embedding, sanding, and cutting to create the desired form and textural surface.

I stop for lunch around 2 check emails and run some errands to the post office. The day is concluded by a walk in nature looking closely at details but also thinking of what to make tomorrow.

Where does inspiration come from for you? Who are you influenced by?

The natural world inspires and teaches me about myself and about my material. I enjoy a drive in the car or on public transport and am often surprised with unexpected spectacular sights and scenery.The artists that I am most inspired by are Ruth Duckworth, Brancusi and Henry Moore .

You live in Daylesford ... what do you love most about life in the country?

Life in the country is a great place to work and live, Daylesford is vibrant and there’s always lots going on. It’s roughly an hour and a half to Melbourne so your close enough to the action and far enough to escape it!

Tell us about a moment you’ve felt most proud of.

My proudest moment is to be sustaining a lifestyle that allows me to discover and learn through something I really enjoy and to have setup a studio space that is functional and beautiful to work in. I have also just completed an intricate pendant that’s in an exhibition at Pieces of Eight.

We’d love to have you at Magnolia Square at some time in the future … do you think that might happen?

Yes! I cant wait to pack my car up and meet other makers and be part of these beautiful markets!

postscript to DIY party decorations ...

Da-da ... this was the result! I used tissue paper in 2 shades of pink and also in red. The pom poms are various sizes and grouped very randomly. I constructed the actual shape while it was hanging, that way I could get a 360 degree view and add bits where required. I have included a few chinese lanterns because their roundness is a nice contrast with the fluffyness of the pom poms. I was enjoying myself so much that I made little pom-poms for the lolly bags.

I have a little more time on my hands while we take a break between events. Can't help myself though ... I still want to decorate, especially with paper! My 8 year old daughter is having a "crafty making party" on the weekend so I will burn some of my creative energy on the decorations, mask making and peg dolls! I think I'll take my cues from the red and pink colour palette shown here.

All of these pretty images are from BHLDN (pronounced beholden) which is an online shop for brides from the creators of Anthropologie, launched in Feb this year. Of course, if you are DIY inclined then lots of these decorations can be created at home with tissue paper, twine, scissors and scrapbooking papers. loving right now ... The Millswyn

I went to the Channel 7 studio on Sunday night for the taping of Dancing with the Stars (did anyone see me in the audience, front row??) We had a quick bite first at The Millswyn in South Yarra which was very pleasant indeed. It is located in the space which was once Lynch's and is decidedly more contemporary. It has a hot right now Scandinavian inspired aesthetic & decor and the food is very simple, of the highest quality and French.

There is something AWESOME about a design project that exceeds size and proportion norms. This is one such project, look at the size of those knitting needles, they are re purposed broomsticks with a sharpened end!

This is the work of Dutch textile designer Christien Meindertsma, who undertook a project for The Nature Conservency. The brief ... to make a floor rug with the wool from an organic flock of Panama sheep, in Lava lake Ranch, Idaho. Each piece of the rug is a different knitting stitch and the yarn comes entirely from the back of one individual sheep. I really want to wrap myself up in that.

Small Magazine is a quarterly publication dedicated to the whole idea of small - small people, small scale production, cute things for the small etc etc. Now in production of the 18th issue, the editors of Small were onto something really BIG when they launched the online magazine back in early 2007. Did they know how many would follow in their little footsteps?

The philosophy at small however has remained true to its little beginnings; a strong focus on independant fashion styled with delightful whimsy, adorable small handmade objects and toys from around the world and illustrations by incredibly talented and sometimes yet to be discovered artists.

A few quick questions with Olivia, one of Small's editors.

You were certainly one of the pioneers in the blogosphere of online magazines, what do you think about the explosion of online publishing in the magazine format?

We think it is great that small scale and independent businesses and creative practitioners have many more places to find exposure. When we first conceived of Small, kids businesses that could not afford major advertising could not get editorial exposures in the larger print magazines. As the larger magazines could not afford to be editorially independent they often used the same contributors for each issue and featured the same big brand items. Working online means our turn-around time is fast, we can be editorially independent and we can reach a far wider audience than we could in print.

Would you reveal a couple of your trade secrets eg. favourite blogs and websites?

Christine and I are magpies and collect inspiration and ideas from everywhere. Our blog, Smaller http://www.smallmagazine.typepad.com/smaller came about as a way of tracking all the ideas we had for the magazine between issues.

We do have lots of favorite websites as our inspirations are diverse! Some we keep going back to are Minor Details for kids furniture and spatial inspiration, Simply Lovely Sweet Fine Day Kick Can and Conkers and Handmade Charlotte for general inspiration, Pikaland for illustration, Design for Mankind and the Design Files for design inspiration and of course Etsy for new creative work. We love looking at other peoples work and ideas but we both have a particular aesthetic and idea about Small which we stay true to.

How do you manage running a magazine and being a mum?

I don't think I would have started the magazine if I was not a mum. My background was in design and teaching, but as I moved overseas and had three kids very close together I went quite quickly from having a busy professional and creative life to spending a lot more time at home and quite often on my own. The magazine became a way for me to keep being actively creative and also to be in touch with interesting people when I was quite house bound.

Christine and I lived in different cities (New York and Dallas) and now in different countries (Australia and America) so it has always been a way for us to work on projects together. Now I my kids are older and I have a job and study I try to be more present and scheduled with what I am doing rather than constantly multi-tasking, but when the children where younger and would nap during the day, the magazine was a project I could pick up at any moment for as long as I had available.

Any advice for mothers starting out on their own?

I think it is important to be realistic about what you need to get out of any venture you are running from home or just starting up.Commercial viability has never been our first concern, (both Christine and I have other work) and for us it is more important we are creatively fulfilled by putting it together. Because of this we have managed to avoid a lot of the disappointments and compromises required to make creative projects sustainable.

Being in a partnership has been a really important aspect for me. We have both pushed each other to extend ourselves but can also cover for each other if one of us needs to step back for a while due to our other commitments.

What does the future hold for small?

We are moving to six issues a year from the next issue and will probably start doing specialty publications, maybe a photo book and a cook book to start with. We have some other plans in the works but its a bit early to know when they will be out at this stage.

I challenge you to find a prettier picture! Is this not THE most divine image you've laid eyes on? (well today anyway). It is the interior of boutique pâtisserie Theurel & Thomas, not in Paris but in Mexico. Theurel & Thomas specialize in French macaroons. They engaged branding strategists Anagrama who looked after all the details from typography to the interior fit out.

The brief according to Anagrama ... " for this project it was very important to create an imposing brand that would emphasize the unique value, elegance and detail of this delicate dessert. White was our primary tool for design. As a result of this the attention was fully oriented to the colorful macarons. We placed two lines in our design in cyan and magenta, as a relation with a modern French flag to inject a vanguard vision to the identity. We selected Didot (created by Firmin and Pierre Didot), a French typography that would present the brand with sophistication ".

Regular readers will know of my fondness for Anthropologie. Here are my current favourites. The myth of adarna rug is a nod to my avian obsession. The calandria armchair references our love for Scandinavian design (well the frame anyway) while the upholstery by artist Ashley Longshore is a lovely abstract contrast.

The orimono cushion features appliqued petals of Japanese fabrics. The dress is simple and pretty but perhaps others felt the same way because it is no longer available!!

Modern Times is a Scandi inspired shopping experience with an expiry date. If you are fond of the sleek designs of Arne Vodder and H J Wegner et al then waste no time in visiting this St Kilda based pop up in the next 3 weeks.

Under the careful eye of designer and retro style enthusiast Amy Voterakis, 25 or so original pieces from the 1950's and 60's have been hand selected and put on a ship from Denmark to Melbourne.

Accompanying these modern beauties is a handful of local designers whose work is also influenced by this iconic time in furniture design (including a couple of Magnolia Square retailers Printspace and Designed in Brunswick - yay!). Creative cues and inspiration are found in many different places. Sometimes its not even inspiration that you seek, just pretty pictures. Old vogue covers really do it for me, particularly the 1950's. The Vanessa Paradis cover bottom right (photogrpahed by Mert & Marcus for French Vogue in November 2008) could just as well be 1958.

bird watching

I have recently enjoyed a spot of bird watching. My new pastime doesn't require a set of binoculars and I don't leave the house. Instead, I have been admiring online, the incredibly skillful work of soft sculpture artist and bird enthusiast, Abigail Brown. I am fascinated by the very precise likeness of these hand stitched birds to the feathered variety on which they have been modelled!

Viewed on mass (see here), her menagerie of exotic and garden variety birds is reminiscent of the Victorian past time of collecting and displaying natural curiosities in cabinets and under glass bell jars. Such bird collections obviously required extensive field trips and a perilous end for the bird!

I am very pleased to say that these delightful little birds are carefully hand constructed from salvaged fabrics and threads by Abigail Brown, a London based textiles graduate who stitches each bird as a one off. Her work has been featured in magazines such as vogue and elle decoration and her birds are sold in Liberty in London and Bensimon in Paris. She also has an etsy and big cartel shop but caution, they are an investment piece.

A couple of weeks ago I gave a talk at the CWC's regular meeting at RMIT. I had a great time and met Neil Hargreaves & Aisling Gallagher of Designed in Brunswick (dib). I was thrilled to have Neil and Aisling at our most recent event and am most appreciative of Neil's generosity with his time and camera! His styled shots of mag square products will appear on the blog soon...

You and your partner Aisling come from creative backgrounds, is this how you met?

Yes we were both working for a cookbook publishing house, I was the food editor and photography manager and Aisling was the senior designer.

What was the impetus to start a home ware label?

It really began with Aisling’s textile studies at RMIT, we had started our own food design and photograph business groupnb.com.au and we were renovating a small factory in Brunswick where we operate from, Aisling wanted to incorporate a screen printing studio and the whole thing started from there.

What are your designs influenced or inspired by?

My interests are a bit mixed really but Aisling’s are more focused to mid 20th Century design, particularly Scandinavian. It is kind of where we ‘centralize’ our collective design work for designed in brunswick.

What are your plans for DIB?

Scarves, Coffee mugs and teacups are next on the list, then ottomans, regarding business, it would be good to get some more retail accounts going.

Advice for someone who is starting out?

Put yourself out there, social networking sites and your own website with some good search words embedded, it is so important now. I know this is about marketing and not products but if you are not out there no one can find you.

3 words to describe you?

Designed, In and Brunswick? No I think our website has it pinned down about as far as we can. ‘Textile based homewares and other stuff’

Favourite week end hangout?

Well if its mid November, then the St.Kilda town hall of course!

papery perfection at PAPERUNWAY

Have you got a thing for paper? Do you love it in all its forms? Crinkled, crisp, torn - magazines, old letters, book pages, even baking paper! Aaah the endless possibilities of a pile of vintage National Geographic magazines. Are you hearing me? Or perhaps you already know ...

The newest online magazine to hit the virtual newsstand is paperunway. We get that it is somewhat of a contradiction; a publication dedicated to paper yet published on line, how very modern and technology friendly. The nice part is that you can buy it in its printed form also.

Paperunway is the result of two dedicated and self confessed paperholics Maree Oaten and Nikki Buckland. I met Maree in February this year when she participated in Magnolia Square's Sydney event as a new retailer with her other business, Little Branch. I was immediately attracted to her beautiful stand in all it's paper glory.

Recognising another paper aficionado in Magnolia Square, Maree & Nikki kindly featured us in their launch issue. Luck would have it that our Sydney show was a homage to papery goodness and so there was plenty of paper products & inspiration to go around including the paper queen herself Jo Neville of Paper Couture who cut, paste and folded a fabulous installation over the 3 days of the show.

I love that about Mag Square ... it is a meeting place for creative minds. Paperunway also met and featured these Mag Square retailers in Issue 1 ... Paula Mills of Sweet William, Elie Azzi of La La Land, Nikki Catalano, Emmy Rose, Me and Amber and our BRILLIANT event photographer Katie Preece.

A big congratulations and thank you to Maree and Nikki for making this project happen. Magnolia Square are big fans and look forward to supporting & contributing to paperunway. We will put the girls In the Spotlight with an interview in the next couple of weeks. I have ikea at my door step which I am pretty happy about because I am partial to the odd DIY project. Today, on my quick quest for some linen (i know, quick and ikea are not usually in the same sentence when describing the timing of a trip to the homeware monolith) this lovely new title caught my eye. I didn't know that ikea sold books.

I was particularly excited by the $19.95 price tag, even more excited when I flipped through the pages, revealing great photography and art direction. Then happy days, I discovered that the end of each chapter a fab DIY wrap up. I got the book and a lovely big piece of linen, so it looks like I have a project this weekend.

Tell us a bit about your business and what inspired you to start your business?
I started my business in 2005, keen to follow my dream of the creative freedom to produce beautiful but practical pieces of art. I have always been inspired by the mystique and aesthetics of the east. Drawing on eastern influences, I like to mix these aesthetics with a western approach to create designs with exotic textures. I like to take an artisan approach to create decorative leather wallets, bags & jewellery and home wares. The work has a rich textile base featuring embroideries, laser cut treatments, applique with large craft stitches, studs, quilting and screen-printing. Colours are rich muddy tones mixed with striking bright highlights and deep matt lowlights. The product feels soft and tactile; it wears well and is highly functional.

Favourite part of the job?
I love the creative side of the design process and seeing my ideas come to life from drawings on paper to a finished product. I also love meeting people who love their Belinda Pieris wallet and show it off as one of their everyday best-loved accessories.

What’s your own persona style?
I really love the style of the 20’s and 30’s. I love to layer clothes that are comfortable and hang well. I love rich colours and prints; I wear a lot of Vixen designs. I also collect interesting designer jewellery, which love to wear.

If money where no object what would buy?
I would love to collect Art Deco Bakelite jewellery; truly beautiful art.
Where would we find you on a typical weekend?
My weekends are usually filled with family activities. I have two children, Oliver who is two and a half and Jasmine who is seven months old. My husband Benjamin and I love to hang out and play with the kids on Saturday morning but most weekends we are rushing around from one party or lunch to the next.

What other designers inspire you?
I am really inspired by friend and mentor Georgia Chapman designer of Vixen. I love that she has created a business that is hands on and creative, that allows her to experiment with her creative ideas. I love the little shop she has created in Gertrude Street, Fitzroy; something I would love to do some day.

What business advice would you give to those just starting out?
Be clear about what it is you want out of your career and your personal life and always carry this plan with you in the back of your mind. To follow your dreams is a wonderful and exciting thing; it is also one of the most difficult things you will ever do. It is important to be sure you are up for the challenge.

Describe your business and your background...

Earthtribe started a couple of years ago with a love for textiles, hand crafted gifts and a desire to support an ethical model of trade. I grew up in India, have a background in design and literature and a passion for traditional crafts. I now call Australia home and am lucky enough to be able to tap into two cultures. Earthtribe has allowed me to use some of my skills, keep alive my interest in crafts and to travel, all in the name of work!
What is your favourite part of the job?

I get very excited when I come across a group that can interpret ideas from paper to object, this could be a potter, a weaver or an embroiderer. The journey of an idea from conception to finished product and the shared smiles it brings is what I cherish the most!

Describe your workspace or where you create

My work is very collaborative so the workspace can be on a rug in an Indian village, amidst yarns and piles of fabric, in a block printing studio or a wood carver's shed!

What’s your own personal style?

Eclectic, comfortable and timeless.

A multiple air ticket to travel the world with my hubby and kids , a large house by the sea for all our friends to visit and spend time with.

Describe your typical workday

A cup of tea, school drop off , head to my desk, check emails and collate orders, prepare dispatch, follow up on things under production, plan for events ahead and all the other things life throws at you in between!
What business advice would you give to those just starting out?

Take the time to research and plan. Stay true to who you are as a business. Be prepared to spend lots more time and energy than you anticipate but enjoy the journey!

Our first Magnolia square event in Malvern, the launch of a few new products and a holiday with the family sometime soon!

Wig Ideas is a collection of character designs inspired by nature that you can have custom made into various products. Customers can buy online or from any of the stockists listed on the website. I design each character and create them into products with the help of local suppliers.

What is your favourite part of the job?
Family and friends' reactions to things I've made for them over the years. A gift that has been made especially for you means so much. Designing characters and creating their packaging, dealing with my fantastic local suppliers, but especially handing the finished product to my clients.

Describe your typical workday:
This week it would be studio space. Every day is different.

Where would we find you on a typical weekend?
At sport with the kids. In the garden/paddock. Making something.

We love to hear about the inspiration behind our favourite retailers. After speaking to Georgia from Heatherly Design Bed Heads (who will be at the Malvern event) we thought we'd share with you a bit about the 'behind-the-scenes' work that went into this stunning photo:

"When I first saw this fabric, I just knew it was perfect for Magnolia Square. Peonies are my favourite flower, not that I have seen too many blue peonies though! The Porters wallpaper has been on my inspiration board for sometime waiting for a home, it was bold to contemplate but had inkling it
would create something special. I was stuck on the side table and how to modernise the shot. When this stunning chair was spotted at Propd, it could not have been more perfect. I only learnt the morning of the photo shoot that pale blue hydrangeas were out of season with only pink or purple available. After many a phone call to my favourite florists, I eventually found these two perfect hydrangeas at Say It With Flowers in High St Armadale - mind you on the other side of town from the studio. Ahhhhhh but it was worth it...So come and meet us at Magnolia Square fair and let us inspire you with the possibilities for your bedroom!"

Melbourne duo, Mark and Lisa Poulier, join us in Malvern to bring us their unique and stunning homewares range.

Tell us a bit about your business...
Although we met when we were studying Graphic Design at uni, we've always shared a passion for Interiors. The idea of starting a business of our own that enabled us to combine the two was enormously appealing, and in January of 2009 it all became a reality.

Favourite part of the job?
It's so hard to pick a favourite... we love the freedom of working from home, the designing, the printing and of course early finish Fridays- what more could you want!

Personal Style?
We love things with a sense of history but are equally drawn to very modern pieces. And obviously anything typographic will always find favour with us.

Describe your typical workday?
No such thing as a typical workday for us although we do tend to spend the mornings answering emails and filling orders from our online shop. Not surprisingly, most afternoons involve a trip to the post office.

Where would we find you on a typical weekend?
On Sunday mornings we often find ourselves rummaging around the stalls at the Camberwell Market, s

o much to see and we rarely come home empty handed.

If money were no object what would you buy?
That's easy, we'd love to take the family on an extended overseas holiday. What seems like an eternity ago we spent some time with friends at a farmhouse in Tuscany, it would be amazing to do it all again!

What business advice would you give to those just starting out?
Be aware that running your own business can be incredibly consuming so it's important to find something you absolutely love, and be prepared to hang in there!

Tell us a bit about your business...

Notions is a boutique business that began in 2009. Our latest collections include a range of vintage and retro inspired jewellery and accessories from fabrics, acrylics and Tasmanian timbers.

What inspired you to start your business?

I often refer to Notions as an accidental business. The evolution from hobby to business was organic. One day I woke up and realised that I could sell hand made accessories for a living and I haven’t looked back. I’ve always been creative and had a passion for textiles and surface design

Favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of my job is developing new collections. I love the rush that comes with finding that perfect design for the packaging or the perfect fabric for brooches and just running with the idea until a collection comes together. I usually have one or two collection ideas on the go at any one time.

What’s your own persona style?

In the last few years I’ve been heavily influenced by the ‘granny chic’ style. Fashion wise I love vintage clothes. I’ve found a lot of my favourite pieces in op shops and second hand stores. My house is filled with lots of vintage tea cups, crochet blankets and vintage inspired knickknacks.

If money where no object what would buy?

A bigger house to store all my fabrics and market props in! My studio is overflowing.

Describe your typical workday...

My typical work day involves lots of coffee. I usually start my day reading emails and catching up on blogs. If I have an order I work on putting that together or I work on a new collection- cutting stencil for screen printing, designing new packaging or putting together a catalogue. Then more coffee (decaf in the afternoon), emails and blog reading.

Where would we find you on a typical weekend?

Either at a design market or in my studio. If I have an idea in my head I have to get it out which often means working on weekends. But I don’t mind. I love my job.

What other designers inspire you?

The Ink & Spindle girls, Kristen Doren, Amy Butler, Jenn Ski and Charles and Ray Eames.

What business advice would you give to those just starting out?

Don’t be afraid to give it a go. It doesn’t have to be a huge leap. I began small with an Etsy store and selling at a few county markets.

Drum roll please...another brand new retailer - the wolf and i - make their Malvern debut!

Describe your business and your background
Between the two of us we have experienced quite a lot!!.
Sam – I have been in the rag trade forever...i have worked all sides of the industry, retail, wholesale and manufacturing. At the moment I manage my own fashion agency and run a small children’s clothing label Ohme Ohmi. Starting a clothing label seemed like the next step. I grew up surrounded by clever women, my mum and Nana have passed on their talents and have been a huge inspiration. We are also very fortunate that I have a seamstress as my mother in-law who has been a fabulous help for Pip & I, making limited edition garments and tweaking patterns. I have always loved being in the fashion industry even though it can be a little tough at times. And that’s right, nearly forgot...I have lovely partner and three gorgeous boys!!
Pip - I have established a great reputation with Pip& Maude and was more than keen to throw something new into the mix!. Having done a degree in graphic communication and worked in the industry for many years, once children came into the equation I had to give up the deadlines and ridiculous hours. Working to some capacity creatively always ... freelance graphic design, painting children's furniture, production designer on an SBS television series ... what ever project I could put my hands on and something that would fit into my responsibilities as a mother. Something new and challenging. Becoming a single mother put urgency on finance and from a fun hobby with a very good friend and a way to meet the neighbours was born what is now Pip & Maude. I have always had an interest in fashion ... not labels and names but developing my own individual style and trying my best not to follow the trends.
Although our backgrounds are quite different we both have a lot to offer our label. Together we have been able to find a comfortable balance with our work and our family life, albeit a little hectic at times.

What is your favourite part of the job?
Seeing our dream come to fruition. We have both worked solo for numerous years in our own respective businesses and it is nice to be able to have someone else to bounce ideas around with and keep motivation at it's peak.
Describe your workspace or where you create
We can often be found with our laptops and sketch pads at our favourite St Kilda haunts. We love the idea of not working from an office space or working to a strict timetable.

What’s your own personal style?
While we both have our own sense of personal style we both agree it is layered, comfortable, easy, unique, relaxed and effortless...even though it does take quite an effort to dress effortlessly!
If money were no object what would you buy?
Sleep!
Describe your typical workday?
Coffee!! List making. Crossing things off that list. More Coffee! Designing The Wolf and I doesn’t seem like work, it is more like a break from our everyday lives!
What business advice would you give to those just starting out?
Start small, dream big! Be willing to make mistakes and ask questions.

What are you looking forward to in 2011?
Launching The Wolf and I at Magnolia Square in April and seeing people wear our clothing. We are looking forward to seeing how The Wolf and I organically evolves.

Busy, busy, busy
